From its beginning, Korea had a great influence over Japanese culture and art and was helped in introducing new technology and studies to Japan. It was a long history of a mentor and protégé like relationship between Korea and Japan. However, this relationship slowly deteriorated around the middle of the 19th century as Japan waged many wars against Korea. At every opportunity, the Japanese government threatened and coerced unequal treaties with Korea by force. Finally in 1910, the Korean government submitted to become a Japanese colony under the Japanese Empire. During the ruling, the Japanese government plundered products, persecuted Koreans, and tried every horrendous atrocity to destroy Koreans' undying spirits.
