Korea is situated
on the northeast section of the
Asian continent.
The Korean peninsula shares its border with
China and Russia to the north and is neighbored
by Japan beyond the East Sea and the South Sea and
by China over the West Sea.
The Korean peninsula which is about 1,000km from
south to north is 222,154 square kilometers
(South Korea: 99,392 sq. km/North Korea: 122,762 sq. km)
in total size. It is about the same size as Britain or Romania.
South Korea is slightly larger than Hungry or Portugal.
Except for the southwestern plains, 70% of the land is covered with mountains which decline from the
west toward the east.
The highest mountain is Baekdusan in North Korea at a height of 2,744 meters, and the second highest
mountain is Hallasan at 1,950 meters in South Korea.
Korea has many rivers in relation to the size of the country, including Hangang and Nakdonggang of
South Korea and Aprokgang and Dumangang of North Korea. Three sides of the land are surrounded
by the sea, all of the country in fact except for the northern portion

The Korean peninsula is divided just slightly north of the 38th parallel. The democratic Republic of
Korea in the south and the communist government of North Korea are separated
by a demilitarized zone.
